How to Ride the Streetcar

Step-by-step directions for using the Portland Streetcar

The Portland Streetcar connects Northwest Portland, the Pearl District, Portland City Center, PSU, RiverPlace and the South Waterfront District. Hours of operation vary, but streetcars run about every 13 minutes during the day (less frequently in the evening and on weekends). The Streetcar is owned and operated by the City of Portland, but is integrated with TriMet service.

1. You can buy a ticket on board or validate a previously purchased ticket on board the streetcar.
2. Signs at each station show when the next train is due. Signs on the front of each train display the streetcar's destination.
3. Stay behind the bumpy tiles and wait for the train to come to a complete stop.
4. The doors will open automatically and you can board the train.
5. The station name is announced before each stop and appears on a reader board overhead.
6. Unlike MAX, streetcars do not stop at every station automatically. When you want to get off, push the yellow strip on the wall or the button by the door.
7. Gather all your personal items and exit the train.

For your safety

• Stop and look both ways before crossing the tracks. Always use the designated pedestrian crossings.
• Never walk or ride your bike on the tracks, or ride your bike on the boarding platform.
• Keep your kids close to make sure you don't get separated.
• If you see suspicious behavior or a suspicious package, or if there is an emergency or unsafe situation on board, tell a TriMet employee or call 9-1-1.
